Saturday 16th February

TSDL Division 1 League

Glengoole United 3-0 Peake Villa Junior B

Villa travelled to the hosts minus a number of regulars for various reasons looking to get back to winning ways. On a difficult pitch surface, with a near gael force wind blowing across the pitch, meant both teams struggled to adjust, with a lot of play been disrupted by the weather. Villa matched the hosts in the physical battles and were very unlucky not to be awarded a penalty in the 30th minute when Adam Garrett was taken down by the last defender after been put through on goal, but the referee waved away the Villa appeals. Half-time 0-0.

In the second half Villa were now playing into the wind and after a couple of corners the home team took the lead after a goalmouth scramble the ball somehow dribbled over the goal line. Villa tried to respond but found chances hard to come by and from another corner by the hosts, their centre-back kept the ball in near the corner flag and hooked it high in the air back into the Villa box and the wind caught the ball, unfortunately carrying it into the far corner of the Villa net to put the hosts 2-0 up with 15 minutes left. Damo Grimes had a chance to pull one back but dragged his shot wide. Villa had a number of corners which were scrabbled clear by the hosts and from one of those corners the home team broke and put the game to bed in final minute. Final score 3-0.

It was a tough game and final score probably doesn’t reflect the balance of the game with some very unfortunate goals conceded but a good win for Glengoole. Best on the day for Villa were Matthew Fogarty, Jack Ryan Casey and Cormac Lanigan.
